Top 7 = We (finally) made it to Chicago!
Aug 07, 2023This week was busy…
Thursday, Bob and I rode to Chicago to share the new documentary at two locations. The drive, which should have taken about 10 hours, lasted over 14-- closer to 15!
Somewhere, near Elizabethtown (near Louisville), we encountered a 4-wreck situation (not a 4-car pileup… 4 individual wrecks).
The first was serious enough to shut the interstate down for a few hours— and force a traffic reroute. During the process of maneuvering, other cars began bumping into each other…
4 wrecks in a 10-mile span.
We also encountered a few extended construction delays (3), as well as multiple speeds traps (5).
Yes, that’s…
π³ 5 speeds traps
π³ 4.5 extra hours on the road
π³ 4 wrecks in a 10-mile period
π³ 3 extended construction delays
π³ 2 tired guys….
Oh… we also had one geese crossing on the way out…
But, we made it safely— and we had a great visit. I write about it below.
Here’s the Top 7.

Fitness = long runs
This week I hit the street, and the closed-down golf course, and a few other spaces I run around the #Hilltop, and put a few miles in…
It was a great diversion AND release with so many moving parts.
Plus, while in Chicago I ran both mornings we were there, and looped past one our host churches…

Finance = Mr. Drippy, simple solution
We saved some π° this week…
We had a plumbing issue and, again, thought it would take a few hundred— if not a few thousand— dollars to fix.
Thankfully, an honest guy from Mr. Drippy (Adam) came over, trouble-shot, and identified a super-simple solution.

Family = Levi
Levi turns 17 this week. I’ve been super-impressed by him and how he’s grown / matured / taken responsibility.
This week, a belt jumped on his car. We tried to find a replacement nut (this was the culprit), but were unable to locate one. We used AAA and had the car towed back to the shop that fixed it…
There’s something special about seeing your kids grow up, take their place in the world, and figure things out…

Field = the wrecks, speeds traps, construction zones… Trauma Comes Home
Thursday, Bob and I rode I-65 up from Birmingham to Chicago, to share the new Crosswinds documentary, Trauma Comes Home, at two screenings in the area.
General James Mukoyama, the CEO / founder of Military Outreach USA, hosted the first showing at his church, Hope Community, on Friday evening. “Chappy” Ferrer, the Executive Director, hosted the second showing on Saturday at Evangel Church.
After running a sound check Friday morning, we grabbed breakfast at a nearby place. The General let it slip that it was his birthday “yesterday.” He had just turned 79.
We planned to eat dinner that night before the screening so, when I made reservations at the place he requested, I noted (online) that it was his birthday. We celebrated… at a dinner he paid for.

Here’s Bob, the General, and me…

And, here’s the General introducing the film.

I hosted the General on episode 3 of the Warrior Hope podcast— first season.

I was honored that my friend Father Ed McKenzie, who is featured in the film (he’s the priest playing the opening song, for those of you who’ve seen the film), rode the “L” from downtown Chicago to the screening.

Faith = Heaven book
During some of my personal / “devotional” time this week, I continued working my way through my Dad’s study on Heaven. Then, later in the day, a few days, I continued dropping his words into my book template.
Beth is working on a cover.
We’ll order a proof copy in the next week, build a webpage, and then share…

Friends = Phil Cooke & friends
My friend Kent Mattox (pastor of Word Alive in Oxford) hosted Phil Cooke for a 4-hour workshop this week. I was grateful to be invited to sit in, listen, and learn.
For the past 30+ years, Phil has equipped churches and ministries to communicate the most important message in the world, and to do so better…
Phil gave us his book— from which I’ve already pulled several insights.
During the lunch break, Kent invited to me to join him and Phil, so I was able to ask more questions, hear his stories, and piece more ideas together.
Particularly over the past few years I’ve seen that the most important stuff in the Kingdom of God occurs through friendships… as we share ideas and gifts… and exchange the deposits the Lord has placed inside each of us.

Fun = the run is fun…
No kidding. I enjoy the break… the outdoors.

If you’ve got something to say…
This month's module for Amplify Pro! was released on the 1st— titled "The Live Event Blueprint."
This training applies, again (like other trainings we do), to everyone... whether you're hosting big events, small events, weekly church services or worship gatherings, seminars...
I've learned this:
Live events ALWAYS carry a certain level of stress with them. You've got to get things done in order to pull them off.
But...
β If you plan in advance...
β And if you do things in a specific order...
β Whether you're trying to monetize the event (i.e., a paid workshop) or not (example: church gathering), having a proven plan helps minimize the stress so you can serve people at your absolute best.
In this training...

That’s the highlight reel for the week.
If you’re just now dropping in, each week I look back at the week behind + preview the week ahead— so I don’t miss anything— and look and highlight at least one thing for which I’m grateful in each of the 7 key areas of life…
